It has been about a year, give or take, since your carpets were last deep cleaned. Here’s what twelve months of ordinary family life quietly leaves in the pile, and the good news about how easily it all comes back out.

More goes in than you’d think. All of it comes back out.
Walked-in soil, dust and dander settle so gradually you never see it happen. One refresh visit lifts the year back out of the fibre.

The Quiet Twelve Months
If you watched us work last time, you saw the colour of the water we lifted out of your carpet. That was years of ordinary life leaving the pile. Since then, the same thing has been happening again, quietly, one day at a time.
Nothing dramatic has happened. That is the point. A carpet does not get dirty in a day. It gets dirty across twelve months of normal living: shoes in the hall, the dog in from the garden, dust settling out of the air, crumbs, the odd splash. Feet, paws and vacuum wheels work all of it down into the pile.
Because you live with it every day, you never see it happen. Your eyes adjust as the carpet drifts. Most people only notice how far it has gone when they see it come back.
Your Carpet Compared With Last Year
The best test is your own memory. Think about how the lounge looked the evening after our last visit: the colour, the way the pile stood up, how it felt underfoot. Then look at the walk-line from the door to the sofa today. The difference between the two is the year.
We keep notes on every home we clean. If you want to know what we flagged last time, ask us and we will tell you.

The Traffic-Lane Tell
Every carpet has a tell, and in our experience it’s almost always the same one.
Walk from your front door to the kitchen, or across the lounge to the sofa, and you’re following the same narrow path everyone else in the house follows. In a busy family home, that path takes thousands of footsteps a month, while the edges of the room take almost none.
That’s where a year first shows itself. In our experience, somewhere around month nine to twelve the walk-lines in the hall and lounge start to go flat and grey: the pile compacts under the traffic, and the fine, gritty soil worked into it dulls the colour.
The rest of the room still looks fine, which is exactly why the lanes stand out when you finally spot them.
The Tells: How A Year Shows Itself
None of this means a carpet is ruined. It’s just the pile quietly asking for a little attention.
- Walk-lines in the hall going flat and grey
- Colours looking duller than you remember them
- The pile feeling compacted underfoot in busy spots
- Vacuuming not lifting it the way it used to
- A room that never smells quite as fresh as it looks
- Darker shading along skirting boards and door edges
Slide a sofa or an armchair a few inches and compare the carpet underneath with the middle of the room. The covered patch is the colour your carpet actually is. The difference between the two is the year.
What’s In the Pile by Now
After about a year of family life, a carpet is typically holding walked-in soil and grit, household dust, hair, pet dander, pollen carried in from outside, and the odd food or drink mark that was blotted and forgotten. Most of it sits low in the pile, below where a vacuum reaches.
None of that makes the carpet the problem. It has spent the year doing its job, catching what comes into the house and holding it in the pile. It just needs emptying.
Why the Grit Matters Most
Of everything on that list, the grit does the real damage. Every footstep grinds it against the fibre. That is what dulls the traffic lanes first, and it is what wears a carpet out early. A yearly clean takes it out before it has time to do lasting harm.
It is also why the busy rooms need cleaning more often than the quiet ones. A hall that takes every trip through the house collects far more grit than a spare room that is slept in a dozen nights a year. Where the grit goes, the wear follows.

The Good News: It Comes Back
A carpet that gets looked after once a year barely has time to decline. This is the part we enjoy most.
A year of everyday soiling sits in the pile, not baked into the fibre itself. That means hot water extraction can lift almost all of it back out.
Walk-lines that have gone flat and grey usually respond beautifully: the grit rinses away, the pile is groomed back up, and the colour comes back with it. In our experience, a maintained carpet recovers to something very close to how you remember it on day one.
There’s a longer game here too. The gritty soil that dulls a carpet also abrades it. Every footstep grinds those particles against the fibre, and that, more than age, is how carpets wear out early.
In our experience, carpets cleaned on a regular rhythm last years longer than carpets that are left, because the grit never sits in the pile long enough to do lasting damage. An annual clean isn’t really about appearances. It protects the thing you paid for.

What a Refresh Visit Looks Like Now
A refresh on a carpet we have cleaned before is a lighter job than the first visit. There is no heavy restoration to fight through, only a year of ordinary life to lift out. We already know your home, the rooms and where the traffic runs, so the visit starts from our notes rather than from scratch.
- Inspect and spot test: we check each room against what we noted last time, look at the lanes and any new marks, and test a hidden patch first.
- Prepare the pile: a thorough dry vacuum with the Kirby, then agitation and pre-spray to loosen the year’s soil.
- Extract the year: hot water extraction with the Enforcer 400 rinses the soil out and takes the moisture back with it.
- Dry and finish: dry pods start the drying, the Gold Musk finish goes on, and the pile is groomed back up.
Drying is usually six to twelve hours, sooner with warmth and airflow and longer without. If one room takes a particular hammering, Gold Guard protection can be added after the clean to help the pile resist the next year’s soiling. Ask about it when you book.
For how rebooking works, our guide The Annual Refresh, Explained covers it step by step.

When to Leave It Longer
Not every room needs doing every year, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a clean you do not need. A spare bedroom slept in a dozen nights a year, or a dining room used at Christmas and birthdays, can usually go eighteen months to two years between cleans.
For most family homes the rhythm is simple. The hall, stairs, landing and lounge once a year. The quiet rooms every other visit.
What That Means for the Price
Carpet is £125 for one or two areas, and £50 for each area after that. So the money follows the rhythm. In a typical year you might book the hall and stairs at £125, then add the lounge and the landing at £50 each. That is £225 for the four places that take the traffic, and the bedrooms wait for next year.
One area and two areas cost the same. If you are only booking one room, it is worth adding the next busiest with it.
When we quote, we will tell you room by room what needs doing this year and what can wait. If half the house does not need it, you will hear that from us first.
The Golden Club, For Homes We Already Know
An annual refresh clears a year of build-up; membership stops it getting that far.
Everything on this page describes twelve months with nobody looking after the carpet but you. An annual refresh resets it once a year. The Golden Club keeps it from drifting in the first place.
What Changes When You Join
- Maintenance visits through the year, so the soil never builds up for twelve months
- Emergency call-outs for spills and accidents. If anything happens between visits, we come out.
- A discount on extras, such as the sofa, a mattress or a rug
- Priority booking, so you get the dates you want in the busy weeks
We have already cleaned for you, so we know your home. We know which rooms take the traffic, what your carpets are made of and what we flagged last time. Joining does not mean starting again with someone new. It means the same people, the same process and the Golden Guarantee on every visit.
The real difference is what happens in between. With one annual visit, a spill in spring is yours to deal with until next year. As a member, you call us and we come out.
What each level includes varies, so ask us which would suit your home, or see the Golden Club page.
Why Prestige Refresh
When customers tell us why they come back, the same four reasons come up. They’re the standard we hold every job to, first visit or fifth.

Quick Answers
My carpet doesn’t look dirty. Does it still need doing?
If it is a busy room and it has been about a year, usually yes. Most of the soil sits low in the pile where you cannot see it, and the change is so gradual that your eyes adjust with it. Slide a sofa a few inches and compare the carpet underneath with the middle of the room.
Do I need to do every room again?
No. The hall, stairs, landing and lounge are worth doing yearly. Quiet rooms such as a spare bedroom can usually wait eighteen months to two years, and we will tell you room by room when we quote.
What will it cost this time?
Carpet is £125 for one or two areas and £50 for each area after that. Sofas, mattresses and rugs are priced on the quote. We confirm the full price before you book, and that is the price you pay.
Is a second clean quicker than the first?
Usually. A carpet that was deep cleaned a year ago has less to lift out, and we already know your home from our notes. Drying is usually six to twelve hours, sooner with warmth and airflow and longer without.
