The First Hour
The single most useful thing you can do right now is open a window. Airflow does most of the drying work, and a gentle cross-breeze will take hours off the drying time. If it’s cold out, a window on the latch with the heating at its normal setting works just as well. There’s no need to blast the radiators; steady, moving air beats heat every time.
Beyond that, the first hour asks very little of you. Stay off the cleaned areas, let the air circulate, and let the carpet get on with it. Drying usually takes six to twelve hours, sooner with warmth and airflow and longer without, the weather, and the airflow. Wool and thicker piles sit at the longer end. You’ll also notice the Gold Musk finish settling in as the room dries; that’s the clean signature scent we leave on every job, and it’s at its best over the first day.
- Open a window or two and keep the air moving through the room
- Stay off the cleaned areas until they feel dry to the touch
- Leave any dry pods or air movers running if we’ve set them up
- Keep pets and little ones in another room for now
Walking On It
The rule of thumb is simple: clean socks first, everything else later. Once the surface feels dry to the touch, walking across it in clean socks is absolutely fine. What you want to avoid is outdoor shoes, bare feet (natural oils transfer more than people think), and slippers that have been round the kitchen floor.
One small thing worth knowing: stepping from slightly damp carpet onto a hard floor can be slippery. Take the first few crossings carefully, especially on stairs and where carpet meets tile or laminate.
Pets and kids can come back as soon as the carpet is completely dry. A freshly cleaned carpet is damp, not dangerous, the same as a freshly mopped floor. Our products are WoolSafe approved, used at the correct dilution, then rinsed and extracted out, so once it’s dry the room is back to normal: cleaner than it’s been in a long while.

When Furniture Goes Back
The room can go back to normal today. Just give the wooden legs one day’s grace.
Furniture can go back once the carpet is completely dry. If you’d like it back sooner, that’s fine too, with one precaution: for the first day, slip felt pads, small foam blocks, or squares of foil under wooden and metal legs.
Here’s why. While the fibre still holds a trace of moisture, wood stains and dyes can wick out of furniture legs and into the carpet, and metal feet can leave faint rust marks. Both are avoidable with a simple barrier, and both are far easier to prevent than to remove. In our experience it’s the single most common aftercare slip we see, and the fix costs nothing.
Heavy pieces like bookcases and sideboards are best left until tomorrow. Once the carpet is fully dry, everything goes back exactly as it was, no pads needed.

Pile Settling & Drying Marks
Over the next few hours the carpet will look a little different, and almost all of it is normal. The grooming lines we leave across the pile are deliberate: they lift the fibre so it dries evenly, and they brush out on their own as the room comes back into use.
You may also notice lighter and darker patches while it dries. That’s just moisture leaving different parts of the pile at different speeds, not a cleaning fault, and it evens out as the carpet dries through. The same goes for a faint damp-wool smell in the first few hours; it carries off with the airflow. Tomorrow, once everything is completely dry, a slow pass with the vacuum will lift the pile and settle the room fully.
Blot it straight away with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in. Don’t reach for a supermarket spray; most are designed to be left in the fibre and can undo today’s work. And if you had Gold Guard applied today, you’ll see spills bead on the surface for a moment: blot them with a dry cloth and they lift away.
By the evening it was dry, the pile had bounced back, and the whole room smelt lovely.
Keeping The Home Well-Aired
The airing habit is worth keeping beyond today. It speeds the drying now, and it quietly does your carpets a favour all year round. Asthma and Lung UK advises keeping your home well-aired to lower humidity, which helps keep dust mites down.
A freshly deep-cleaned carpet is holding far less trapped dust, dander, and pollen than it was this morning. Regular airing helps it stay that way, and it’s the easiest piece of aftercare there is: ten minutes with the windows open most days.
What We Did Today
For anyone curious, here’s the sequence your carpets went through. It’s the same standard on every job.
Inspect & Spot TestWe check the fibre and test a hidden area before anything touches the carpet.
Deep CleanKirby dry vacuum, agitation, pre-spray, then hot water extraction with the Enforcer 400.
Dry & DeodoriseDry pods take the moisture down, and the Gold Musk finish goes on free with every clean.
Protect & GroomGold Guard where it was chosen, then the pile is groomed to dry evenly and finish properly.
If Something Doesn’t Look Right
Most of what you’ll see today fades as the carpet dries: grooming lines, patchiness, the odd damp shadow. But occasionally an old, deep stain can wick back up as the fibre dries out, showing a mark that had disappeared while wet. It’s a known behaviour of certain stains, not a sign the clean didn’t work, and it’s exactly the kind of thing we come back for.
So the ask is simple: give it 24 hours to dry through, and if anything still doesn’t look right, just tell us. No forms, no fuss. If you’re not satisfied with the clean, we’ll come back free of charge until you’re 100% satisfied. That’s the Golden Guarantee, and it’s why we’d always rather hear about a niggle than have you live with it.

Quick Answers
How long until my carpet is dry?
usually six to twelve hours, sooner with warmth and airflow and longer without, much like washing on a line. Open a window and keep the air moving and it dries noticeably faster. If timing matters, ask about same-day dry as a priority on your next clean.
When can furniture go back on the carpet?
Once it’s completely dry. If you’d like it back sooner, put felt pads, foil, or small blocks under wooden and metal legs for the first day. Damp fibre can pick up marks from wood dyes and metal, and a simple barrier prevents it.
When can kids and pets walk on it?
Clean socks are fine once the surface feels dry to the touch. Shoes, paws, and playtime should wait until it’s completely dry, usually six to twelve hours. It’s damp, not dangerous, the same as a freshly mopped floor.
Is it normal for the carpet to look patchy or smell damp?
Yes, both. Lighter and darker patches are just moisture drying at different speeds, and the faint damp smell carries off with the airflow. Grooming lines brush out on their own. If anything still doesn’t look right once it’s fully dry, tell us and we’ll come back under the Golden Guarantee.
