Are the Products Safe for Children and Pets?
What we use, and why a good clean leaves no strong smell

If you have young children crawling on the floor, or a dog that treats the living room rug as a second bed, it is fair to wonder what actually goes into a carpet clean. It is one of the most common questions we are asked, and it deserves a proper answer rather than a marketing line.
The short version is that a good professional clean should leave your carpets fresh, dry within a few hours, and free of any strong chemical smell. This post walks through what we use, how the process works, and the sensible questions to ask any cleaner before you book. No scare stories, just how it really works.

A good clean should not smell of chemicals
Here is a useful rule of thumb. If a room still smells strongly of cleaning product hours after the job is finished, something has been left behind that should have been rinsed out.
A professional clean should smell of very little. Clean, faintly fresh, and then nothing at all once the carpet has dried. A heavy perfumed or chemical smell is not a sign of a deeper clean. It is usually a sign of residue sitting in the fibres.
What our process actually uses
Most of our work is done by hot water extraction, often called steam cleaning. In plain terms, a cleaning solution is worked gently into the carpet, then hot water is injected and immediately vacuumed back out under strong suction.
That final step matters more than anything else. The extraction pulls the loosened dirt and the cleaning solution back out together, so very little is left behind. The fibres are rinsed, not just wetted.
Why we choose WoolSafe-approved solutions
The solutions we reach for are chosen to be effective on soil but gentle on the fibre and on your home. Where a carpet or rug calls for it, we use WoolSafe-approved products, which are independently tested to be safe for delicate fibres like wool.
Being kind to the fibre and being kind to the household tend to go hand in hand. A product that is safe enough not to damage a natural wool pile is not a product that leaves harsh fumes behind.

Low-residue methods, and why residue matters
We work to a simple principle: get the dirt out, and get the cleaning agent out with it. A low-residue clean means the carpet is left as close to neutral as possible, with nothing tacky left sitting in the pile.
This is the quiet difference between a clean that stays clean and one that greys up again within weeks. Residue is the reason some carpets look worse a month after cleaning than they did before.
How cheap or DIY products can leave sticky residue
Hire machines and supermarket carpet shampoos are often heavy on foaming detergent and light on rinsing power. The detergent goes in, but a domestic machine rarely has the suction to pull it all back out.
What stays behind is a slightly sticky film. That film is attractive to dirt, so the carpet actually re-soils faster than before. It can also hold a stale smell, because damp detergent sitting in the backing takes a long time to leave.
None of this means DIY is dangerous. It simply tends to leave you chasing the same marks again, and that is worth knowing before you spend a Saturday on it.
Drying time and good ventilation
Because we extract most of the moisture as we go, carpets are usually touch-dry in a few hours, and fully dry within the day depending on the room, the fibre and the weather.
We will open things up, use air movers where it helps, and talk you through keeping a window ajar and the heating ticking over. Good airflow is the simplest thing that speeds drying and clears any faint dampness in the air.

When children and pets can go back in the room
In most homes, once the carpet is touch-dry there is no reason to keep anyone out. We will always give you a clear steer on the day based on what we have cleaned and how wet it is.
There are no harsh fumes to wait out. The main reason to hold off is simply the damp underfoot, which is about comfort and avoiding slips on hard floors nearby, not about anything in the air.
A sensible word on pet accidents and stains
Pet and child messes sometimes need a targeted treatment before the main clean, and we choose those with the same care. The aim is to break down the soiling and then rinse it away, not to mask it with a strong scent.
Deodorising and sanitisation are included in every job as standard, so tackling the sources of odour is part of the normal process, not an upsell.
What to ask any cleaner about their products
You do not need to be an expert to book with confidence. A few plain questions tell you most of what you need to know.
Ask whether they use hot water extraction and rinse the solution back out. Ask if their products are suitable for homes with children and pets, and whether anything is WoolSafe-approved for natural fibres. Ask how long the carpet will take to dry, and when it is safe to walk on.
A cleaner who knows their trade will answer all of that easily and without hesitation. Vague answers, or a promise that a strong smell means a strong clean, are both worth noting.
Our approach at Prestige Refresh
We use hot water extraction, low-residue methods, and fibre-appropriate solutions including WoolSafe-approved products where they suit the carpet or rug. The goal every time is a clean that rinses out properly and leaves the room fresh rather than fragranced.
The price is fixed in writing before we start, with deodorising and sanitisation included, payment on the day, and no deposit. You know exactly what is happening in your home before anyone lifts a hose.
Our Golden Guarantee, and a calm next step
We keep our promise simple. We will not tell you a stain will vanish or predict an exact result, because honest work does not come with guarantees like that. What we will say is this: if you are not happy with the clean, we come back and re-clean it free. That is the Golden Guarantee.
If you have been putting off a clean because of little ones or pets, hopefully this has put your mind at ease. When you are ready, we are happy to take a look and give you a fixed quote in writing, with no pressure either way. Ask us anything you like first. That is what we are here for.
