A pet has had an accident on the carpet. You cleaned it up, it looked fine, and then a week later, on a warm afternoon or when the heating came on, the smell was back. Maybe it never really left. You have probably tried a spray or two by now, and you are probably tired of noticing it every time you walk into the room.

How pet urine soaks past the carpet surface into the underlay.

That smell is the real problem, and it is not your fault that it has stayed. Urine behaves differently from every other spill in the house, and nothing on a supermarket shelf is built to reach where it actually goes.

If you have had a quote from us and are still weighing it up, the question on your mind is a fair one: will it actually go? This page answers that straight, including the cases where the honest answer is not a simple yes.

The short answer

Will a professional clean get rid of pet urine smell for good?

In most homes, yes. We find every patch with a UV torch, break the urine down at the source and flush it out of the backing, and the smell goes. Where it has soaked in over months or years, it may leave a faint shadow or need a section of underlay replaced, and we tell you that before we start.

The Golden Guarantee: whatever the reason, if you’re unhappy with your clean, we come back free of charge until you’re 100% satisfied.

Why it’s different

Why Urine Is Not Like Other Stains

Most spills sit in the pile. Urine goes all the way down, and then it changes.

When a pet wees on a carpet, it does not stay in the fibres you can see. It runs straight through the pile into the backing, then into the underlay, and on an older carpet sometimes into the floorboards beneath. The mark on top might be the size of a saucer. The patch in the underlay is often much bigger, because the liquid spreads sideways as it soaks down.

Then it dries, and this is where it gets stubborn. The water goes, but what was in it stays behind as salts and crystals tucked into the base of the carpet. Bacteria feed on what is left and give off the sharp, ammonia smell everyone recognises. Those salts also pull moisture out of the air, so on a humid day, after a shower, or when the heating warms the room, the old patch dampens slightly and the smell wakes up again. That is why it seems to come and go.

Why It Comes Back After A Wipe

Wet the carpet and whatever is in the backing starts to move. As the carpet dries, moisture travels up the fibres to the surface and carries dissolved urine with it. This is called wicking. A patch that looked clean while it was damp can show a yellow ring and smell again by the evening, because the source underneath was never dealt with.

There is one thing about urine that works in your favour. Dried urine glows under ultraviolet light. Shine a UV torch across the carpet in a dim room and old patches show up as bright marks, including ones nobody knew were there. That matters, because the spot you know about is very rarely the only one.

  • The smell is stronger on warm or damp days
  • A yellow or brown ring appears after you clean it
  • One patch feels stiff or crunchy underfoot
  • Your pet keeps going back to the same place

Why Sprays And Hire Machines Make It Worse

Almost everyone tries something first, and most of it makes the next clean harder.

Shop sprays are built to make the room smell nicer for a while, and most do exactly that. The fragrance sits on top of the urine smell rather than removing it. A day or two later the perfume fades and the urine is still there, now with a layer of residue on top. Many of these products are made to be sprayed and left, so that residue builds up in the same patch every time you treat it.

Hire machines have a different problem: plenty of water goes in, and not enough comes out. The suction is far weaker than a professional machine, so much of the water stays in the carpet. On a urine patch, that extra water dissolves the dried salts in the backing and spreads them outwards into a wider ring. The carpet then stays wet for a long time, which is exactly what the bacteria want. People often tell us the smell was worse after a hire machine than before it.

Heat is the other trap. Steam cleaners, very hot water, a hairdryer to speed up drying, or an iron through a towel all feel like they should help. On untreated urine, heat can set the stain into the fibre and bond the smell to it, which turns a patch we could have lifted into one that may only fade.

Some home remedies cause their own trouble. Cleaners with ammonia in them smell, to a pet, a lot like urine, which can draw them straight back to the same spot. Bleach can strip the colour out of the carpet for good. Scrubbing pushes the urine deeper and roughens the pile.

None of this means you did anything wrong. It is what most people reach for, because it is what is on the shelf. If you have tried any of it, just tell us when we come out, because it changes how we treat that patch.

What works

What Actually Gets It Out

Getting rid of urine for good comes down to four things done in order: find it, break it down, flush it out, dry it fast.

Find Every Patch

We start with the UV torch, with the curtains drawn where we can. It shows the full spread of each patch, not just the middle you can see, and it finds the ones in corners, behind furniture and along the skirting boards where pets like to go. We mark them out so nothing is missed. It is common to find two or three patches for every one the customer mentions.

Treat It At The Source

Each patch gets a urine-specific treatment: an enzyme product or a specialist urine neutraliser, depending on the carpet and how old the soiling is. These break down what the bacteria feed on, so the smell is taken apart rather than covered up. The key is time. The product has to reach right down to where the urine went, and it has to dwell and do its work before any hot water goes near it. Rushing this step is the most common reason a urine clean does not hold.

Flush, Extract And Dry

Once the treatment has worked, we flush the patch with hot water extraction and pull it straight back out with strong suction. On heavier patches we go over it more than once, so the loosened urine comes out of the backing instead of being left to wick. Then we get the air moving with dry pods. Drying is usually six to twelve hours, sooner with warmth and airflow and longer without. The faster it dries, the less chance anything deep down has to climb back up.

A Second Pass If It Wicks

On old or heavy patches, a faint ring can still come up as the carpet dries, because the first clean has drawn the last of it towards the surface. That is not the end of the road. Once the carpet is fully dry, we come back and treat it again, and the second pass usually finishes it. That visit is covered by the Golden Guarantee: if you’re not satisfied with the clean, we come back free of charge until you’re 100% satisfied.

Step 1

UV torch, 5 minCurtains drawn, torch across the floor. Every patch glows, including the ones behind the sofa. We mark them and show you.

Step 2

Spot testThe enzyme or neutraliser on a hidden corner under a white cloth. Urine can already have weakened the dye, so the test matters more here than anywhere.

Step 3

Dry vacuumThe Kirby over the whole carpet first, so we are treating urine, not the dust on top of it.

Step 4

Treat and dwell, 10 to 20 minEach patch is soaked with the treatment to the depth the urine went, then left to work. This is the step a rushed clean skips, and the reason urine cleans fail.

Step 5

Flush and extractHot water extraction over the patch, more than once on heavy ones, then dry passes to pull the backing dry so nothing wicks back.

Step 6

Deodorise, dry, re-checkThe whole carpet cleaned and deodorised, air movers on the patches first, and a second look once dry. If a ring comes up, we come back.

The underlay

When The Underlay Is Beyond Saving

Sometimes the carpet can be saved but the layer underneath cannot, and you should hear that before you book.

Underlay is a sponge. It is made to be soft and absorbent, which makes it lovely underfoot and very bad at letting go of urine. When an accident happens once and is dealt with, the treatment can reach it. When a pet has used the same corner for months or years, the underlay in that spot can be soaked through, and no clean from above can flush all of it out without wetting the carpet far more than is safe.

The signs are usually clear once you know them:

  • A strong smell even when the carpet looks clean
  • A large patch that glows edge to edge under UV
  • A waft of ammonia when you press down on the spot
  • Backing that feels stiff, crunchy or brittle
  • Staining that has gone through to the floorboards

In those cases we will tell you plainly that cleaning will improve it, but the smell may keep returning until that section of underlay is replaced. It is often a small area, not the whole room. A carpet fitter can lift the carpet back, cut out the affected underlay, treat or seal the floor beneath, and lay the same carpet back down. The carpet itself can then be treated and cleaned properly, and in most cases it is perfectly fine to keep.

We would rather say this at the start than take your money for a clean, come back twice, and still leave you with a smell. If we think the underlay is beyond saving, you hear it from us before any work begins, and the decision is yours.

And if we think it can be saved, we say that too. Most homes we see with pet accidents never get near this point, especially where the accidents were occasional and someone blotted them up at the time.

Synthetic carpet

  • The fibre does not absorb, so the urine is in the backing and underlay, not the pile
  • Takes a thorough flush and dries fast
  • Colour usually survives; the smell is the whole problem

Wool carpet

  • Wool takes dye, and old urine changes colour, so a faint shadow can stay after the smell has gone
  • WoolSafe products only, less water, fast drying
  • Treated early, wool comes up well; left for months, expect improvement rather than erasure

Rugs

  • Treated both sides; the UV torch on the back shows how far it spread
  • Dried flat and fast
  • A rug soaked through for months may need a workshop that can immerse it

Sofas and mattresses

  • Cushion covers are treated on the fabric; foam that is soaked through is harder
  • A mattress patch is treated with low moisture and dried before the sheets go on
  • We look first and say how far we expect to get

What We Do And What We Can’t Promise

Here is what happens when we arrive, and the limits we are honest about before we start.

We begin by asking about the history: which pets, which rooms, roughly how long, and what has been tried already. Then we draw the curtains and go over the carpet with the UV torch. We show you what we find, so you see the spread for yourself rather than taking our word for it.

Before any product goes down, we spot test a hidden area. Each patch is treated and left to dwell, the whole carpet is cleaned with hot water extraction, and the urine patches get extra flushing and extraction. We finish with our Gold Musk deodorise and leave the air moving with dry pods. Our products are WoolSafe approved and safe for pets once the carpet is dry, and we are DBS-checked and fully insured.

What We Can’t Promise

As urine ages, it can change the colour of the carpet itself, especially on wool and lighter shades. Where that has happened, the clean removes the urine but cannot put the colour back. You may be left with a faint shadow where the patch was. It is clean and it no longer smells, but it can still be seen in the right light.

With old, repeated soiling there is also a chance of a faint smell on warm, humid days, even after a thorough clean, because a trace remains somewhere we could not safely reach. It is usually far milder than before, but we will not tell you it is impossible. We say all of this before we start, not after, so if you go ahead you know what to expect. If something we said should come out has not, the Golden Guarantee covers it and we come back.

Family with a puppy or a new kitten

  • Expect several small patches rather than one big one; the torch finds them
  • Treated early, they lift completely
  • Keep the pet off the area until it is dry, then the habit usually breaks

Elderly dog or cat

  • Often the same spot for months, so the underlay is the question
  • We tell you plainly if a section of underlay needs replacing
  • A vet check if the accidents started suddenly

Tenant moving out

  • Odour is the thing most often deducted for, and the thing most worth treating properly
  • Book the day before check-out so it is dry for the inspection
  • A dated receipt showing a urine treatment, not just a clean

Landlord after a pet tenancy

  • The torch tells you the real extent before you decide on clean versus replace
  • A clean and treatment usually saves the carpet; a soaked underlay section is replaced
  • We bill you directly and send the receipt for the file
Staying fresh

Keeping It From Coming Back

Once the old patches are gone, the aim is to stop new ones from setting in.

A pet that has used a spot before will often go back to it, because to their nose it still smells like the right place. Removing the urine properly breaks that habit far better than any deterrent spray. For the first few days after a clean, while the carpet dries and the last of the old scent fades, it helps to keep pets out of the room or put something over their favourite spot.

When a fresh accident happens, speed matters more than any product. Blot up as much as you can with a dry cloth, pressing rather than rubbing, then blot with a little cold water. If you want to use something, choose a pet-specific enzyme cleaner and leave it to work as the label says. Keep ammonia, bleach and heat well away from it.

If a house-trained pet suddenly starts having accidents, it is worth a trip to the vet. Infections, kidney trouble and plain old age are common causes, and no amount of cleaning will keep up with a problem that has not been treated. Stress plays a part too: a new baby, a house move, building work or a new pet can all set it off.

  • Keep pets off the cleaned area until it is fully dry
  • Blot fresh accidents straight away, then cold water
  • Use an enzyme cleaner, never ammonia or bleach
  • Keep the litter tray clean and somewhere quiet
  • See the vet if accidents start out of the blue

For homes with pets, a regular rhythm stops anything building up: a clean every six to twelve months, and a quick call-out when an accident happens rather than waiting for the next big clean, so a patch is treated while it is still near the surface and not months later in the underlay. If you smell something you are unsure about, send us a message and we will tell you straight whether it needs us.

What To Ask Us

  • Can you check the whole room with the torch, not just the spot I know about?
  • Is my carpet wool, and will the colour come back as well as the smell?
  • How will I know if it is the underlay, and what would that cost?
  • What should I do with the dog while it dries, and for the first week after?

Ask any of them by replying to the message that brought you here, or ring your local number. We answer plainly, and there is no pressure from us either way.

Quick Answers

Will the smell come back when the weather gets warm?

If the urine has been removed from the backing, no, because there is nothing left for damp air to wake up. Where soiling was old and repeated, a faint trace can sometimes show on humid days, and we tell you before we start if we think that is likely. If it comes back stronger than we said, tell us and we come back.

Is the urine treatment safe for my dog or cat?

Yes. Our products are WoolSafe approved, used at the right dilution and extracted back out rather than left in the carpet. Keep pets off the area until it is dry, usually six to twelve hours, and it is then safe for them to lie on.

Can you get urine out of a sofa or mattress?

Often, yes. The same principle applies: find it, treat it at the source, flush it out and dry it fast. Mattresses and thick cushions hold urine deep inside, so we look first and tell you honestly how far we expect to get before we start.

Do I need to show you where the accidents were?

It helps, so tell us what you know. You do not need to find them all, though. The UV torch shows us every patch, including the ones nobody noticed, and we show you what we find before we treat anything.

How long does a urine treatment add to the clean?

Around 15 to 20 minutes per patch on top of the room clean, mostly dwell time while the treatment works. Heavy or repeated patches take longer and get more than one flush. It is priced per area and agreed before we start.
