Most days, the job we arrive for is the job we do. We spot-test, we clean, and we leave the room damp and drying. But every so often, something on the day tells us that cleaning a particular item, or cleaning it the usual way, would do more harm than good.

Talking through what we can and cannot safely clean on the day.

When that happens, we stop and tell you. Not after the work, and not buried in an invoice. This page explains the situations where we say no, why we say it, and what we offer you instead. If it ever happens in your home, you will know it is a decision made for your benefit, not ours.

It does not happen often. On most jobs, everything booked gets cleaned and nothing on this page comes up. But it is better to know how we handle it now, calmly, than to be caught off guard on the day with the furniture already moved.

The short answer

Will you ever refuse to clean something on the day?

Occasionally, yes. If a spot test, a label or what we find under the surface tells us a clean would cause damage, we stop and explain why. Then we offer you the safest option that is left.

Why we stop

Why A No Can Be The Right Answer

A clean that damages something is worse than no clean at all.

Nobody books a cleaner hoping to hear the word no. You have cleared the room, planned your day around us, and you want the job done. We understand that, and we do not say no lightly.

But some damage cannot be undone. A rug that shrinks out of shape stays out of shape. A sofa cushion that loses its colour does not get it back. A carpet that was already coming apart underneath can ripple or lift once it is wet. In each of those cases, the clean you booked would leave you worse off than before.

Most of what decides this cannot be seen in a photo or heard on a phone call. It shows up when we test a hidden corner, read a label, or put a hand on the carpet. That is why the decision sometimes happens on the day. We would always rather make it before the work than find the problem halfway through.

So the rule is simple. If we believe cleaning something will harm it, we tell you plainly and explain what we found. The choice of what happens next is yours.

  • The spot test result on a hidden corner.
  • The care label on sofas, cushions and mattresses.
  • How the carpet feels underfoot and at the edges of the room.
  • Any smell, damp or staining coming up from below.
  • What has already been used on a mark before we arrived.
The spot test

When The Spot Test Says Stop

Every clean starts with a test in a hidden corner, and now and then that test tells us not to go on.

Before anything goes near the main area, we test our products on a spot nobody will see: behind a door, under a cushion, on the underside edge of a rug. We check the cloth and we check the fibre. Most of the time all is well and we carry on. These are the times it is not.

Colour That Bleeds

If dye comes away onto the white cloth, the colour in that fabric is not stable. Clean it the normal way and the colour can run into lighter areas, leaving halos and smears that are very hard to reverse. Older carpets, hand-dyed rugs and deep reds and blues are the usual ones. That is exactly why the test happens first, on a patch nobody will ever see. Sometimes a gentler, drier approach is safe. Sometimes it is not, and we say so.

Wool And Viscose Rugs

Some wool rugs, especially those with a cotton or jute base, can shrink or pull out of shape when wet, because the base tightens unevenly as it dries. Viscose rugs, often sold as art silk or bamboo silk, are more fragile still. Water can leave them yellowed, flattened and patchy, and that damage is usually permanent. If a rug is at real risk, we will not wet clean it in your home. We will tell you what it is made of and what we would suggest instead.

The Dry-Clean-Only Sofa

Many sofas carry a label saying dry clean only. On its own, that does not stop us, because plenty of those fabrics clean well with water and the label is often the maker being cautious. What decides it is the spot test. If a hidden patch shrinks, rings, loses colour or changes texture, we stop there. The no comes from the fabric, not the label.

If the test is borderline, we tell you that too. We explain the risk in plain words, and what a gentler method can and cannot achieve. Some customers choose a lower-moisture clean knowing the result may be lighter. Others would rather leave a treasured piece alone. Both are reasonable, and it is your call.

Under the surface

What We Find Under The Surface

Some problems sit below the part of the carpet or mattress you can see.

A clean works on the fibre. It cannot repair what is underneath, and sometimes what is underneath means a clean would make things worse.

A Carpet Coming Apart

Most carpets are layers bonded together: the pile you walk on and a backing beneath it. With age, wear or an old flood, that bond can fail. This is called delamination, and you often feel it before you see it. The carpet ripples, bubbles or moves loose underfoot. Wetting a delaminated carpet can loosen it further. If we find it, we tell you, and in most cases we recommend a carpet fitter looks at it before any clean.

Rot Or Damp Beneath

Now and then we press on a carpet and the floor gives. Or the carpet is already damp from below, or there is a smell that cleaning will not touch. That usually means a leak, rising damp or rot in the boards. Putting more water on top helps nobody. The source has to be found and fixed first, and we will point you towards the right trade. If we notice it, we will show you what we found so you can see it for yourself.

A Mattress With Mould

Mould on the surface of a mattress fabric can sometimes be treated. Once it has gone into the filling, a clean cannot reach it, and we would only be making the cover look better for a short while. If that is what we find, we will tell you plainly rather than take payment for a clean that will not hold. A mattress in that state is usually one to replace.

None of these can be fixed with a better machine or a stronger product. They are reasons to stop and get the right person in. Once the problem underneath has been sorted, we are glad to come back and clean, and the result will last because the cause has gone.

Marks that stay

Stains That Are Already Permanent

A few marks are not dirt at all, so no clean can lift them.

This kind of no is slightly different. We will usually still clean the carpet or the sofa. What we will not do is promise to remove a mark that cleaning cannot remove, or keep working at it in a way that harms the fibre around it.

  • Bleach: it strips the colour from the fibre, so there is no stain left to lift, only a pale patch.
  • Hair dye and some household dyes: they become the new colour of the fibre rather than sitting on it.
  • Iron and heat burns: on synthetic fibres the tips melt and fuse, and on wool they scorch.
  • Old marks set by heat, harsh sprays or years of waiting.

With each of these, scrubbing harder or reaching for a stronger product does not help. It weakens the fibres and spreads the damage. So we tell you before we start that the mark will stay, or at best fade a little, and you decide whether to go ahead with the rest of the clean.

Where a permanent mark really matters to you, there are sometimes better answers than cleaning. A small carpet repair, a patch taken from an offcut, or a specialist re-dye can do what we cannot. We are happy to talk you through those options and who to ask.

It is worth mentioning a mark like this when you book. A photo and a rough idea of what happened lets us tell you before the day whether it is a stain we can lift or damage we cannot. Then nothing about it is a surprise when we arrive, and you can plan around it. If it turns out to be damage, we can still clean everything around it so the rest of the room looks its best.

The wrong booking

When The Job Isn’t What Was Booked

Sometimes the job in front of us is different from the one we planned for.

Most bookings are made from a quick description or a couple of photos, and that is usually enough. Now and then, what we find on the day is a different job. Four rooms rather than two. A heavily soiled carpet at the end of a tenancy rather than a routine clean. A sofa booked as fabric that turns out to be leather, which is a different clean with a different price. None of this is anyone’s fault. It is simply hard to judge a room from a description.

When that happens, we do not quietly start and sort it out later. We stop, explain the difference, and give you the choice. The price quoted is the price paid, so nothing changes on your bill without you agreeing to it first.

  • We do the job that was booked, properly, and arrange another visit for the rest.
  • We agree the extra work with you there and then, if there is time to do it well.
  • We leave anything we cannot clean safely, and tell you who can.

What we will not do is rush a bigger job into a smaller slot. A clean squeezed into the wrong amount of time is a clean done badly, and we would rather come back than cut corners in your home.

You can help us get this right before we arrive. Tell us how many rooms, whether the stairs and landing are included, what the sofas are covered in, and anything you already know is delicate or damaged. The more we know beforehand, the less likely a surprise on the day.

What you get instead

What We Offer Instead Of Doing Harm

A no from us is never the end of the conversation.

If we decide something should not be cleaned the usual way, we do not just pack up and leave. We look for the next best thing and put it to you plainly.

  • A safer method: a lower-moisture or gentler clean that the fibre can take.
  • A partial clean: the rest of the room or the other cushions, leaving the one item at risk.
  • A referral: a carpet fitter, a damp specialist or a specialist rug cleaner, depending on what we find.
  • A plain explanation: what we found, why it matters, and what we would do in your position.

We will also tell you honestly if we think the best answer is to leave something alone for now. Not everything needs a professional clean, and a careful vacuum and a little patience is sometimes the kindest thing for an old or fragile piece.

Why The Guarantee Makes Us Careful

Our Golden Guarantee is simple: if you’re not satisfied with the clean, we come back free of charge until you’re 100% satisfied. That promise only works if we are honest at the start. A re-clean can sort out a mark that did not lift. It cannot unshrink a rug or put colour back into a cushion.

So the guarantee does not make us careless. It makes us careful. We would rather say no on the day, and lose part of the job, than say yes and leave you with something that can never be put right. If it ever happens in your home, that is the reason. We would rather you heard it from us at the door than discovered it a week later.

Why Prestige Refresh

When customers tell us why they chose us, the same four reasons come up. Each one is a promise we can keep on every visit.

Quick Answers

Can’t you just try it and see?

Not when the risk is damage that cannot be undone. The spot test is the trying. If a hidden patch shrinks, bleeds or changes texture, the rest of the item will do the same, only where everyone can see it. We would rather lose a small part of a job than ruin something you cannot replace.

Why didn’t you spot this before the day?

Most of these things only show up in person. A photo cannot show whether a dye is stable, whether a backing has come away, or whether a floor is soft underfoot. If you suspect any of them, such as a rug you think might be viscose or a carpet that already ripples, tell us when you book and we will look at it first.

My sofa says dry clean only. Does that mean you won’t clean it?

Not on its own. Many of those fabrics clean well with water, and the label is often the maker being cautious. We spot-test a hidden area first, and if the fabric shrinks, rings or loses colour, we stop and tell you.

What happens to the rest of my booking if one item can’t be cleaned?

We carry on with everything that is safe to clean, unless you would rather rearrange. We talk it through with you before we carry on, and nothing changes on your bill without your agreement. If you would rather we came back for everything once a problem is fixed, we can arrange that instead.
